Welcome to the Australian Housing Data portal. The dashboards that are available here have been developed by CSIRO to help those involved in the residential building industry to get greater understanding of how we are going at moving our new dwellings and suburbs towards higher energy efficiency and lower emissions.
The dashboards are interactive and contain filters and controls that allow you to customise the view to answer a whole range of questions. A guide to using and navigating the dashboards is outlined below.
Energy efficiency star ratings are the core of the NatHERS program and all new dwellings are required to demonstrate how they meet the energy efficiency requirements in the National Construction Code. The dashboards in this section show how the star ratings are distributed based on a variety of geographical boundaries, including climate zones, states and territories, local government areas and even postcodes.
How are our dwellings designed to improve energy efficiency? These dashboards look at what design approaches have been used, including building area, orientation and zoning.
Construction systems used around Australia vary from region to region. These dashboard allow you to explore the type of floor, wall and roof construction systems that have been employed around Australia. Additional dashboards look at window types, insulation used and shading devices.
The appliances that we install in our dwellings have a big impact on the overall energy efficiency of our homes. These dashboards explore lighting systems, hot water systems, heating/cooling loads and the uptake of PV systems throughout Australia.
Each dashboard has similar navigation and control settings to allow you to fully explore the data that is presented. The image below shows a typical dashboard with the four main navigation and control functions highlighted. These are:
Filters appear on each dashboard and allow you to refine the dashboard to a specific subset of data. The filters are arranged into several main sections. These are:

Navigation controls are found in the bottom right hand corner of each dashboard. There are three navigation controls which are:
There are two sharing controls that allow you to copy the URL for this dashboard or copy the embed code for this dashboard, allowing you to embed this dashboard into your own website. You can also download an image or pdf of the dashboard, but you cannot download the underlying data. This functionality has been disabled on all dashboards.
You can also set the dashboard to display in full screen mode for presentation purposes. To return to the normal view press the Esc key on your keyboard.
Hovering over many of the visualisations will trigger a pop up window to be displayed. This pop up will display additional information about that particular data point or region. Some pop ups also contain their own data visualisation, such as a histogram.
